But, how do you know if you have been doing a good job at maintaining good oral hygiene? One of the best ways to determine is by the odour of your breath. Most people complain of bad breath, also called halitosis, and this is due to the bacteria present in the mouth.

The large number of bacteria in the mouth feed on food debris and release gases, that cause a bad odour emanating from the mouth. Halitosis can mean many different things and most people wonder what can be the home remedies for bad breath?!

Most people do not realise that they have a bad breath until they have been told by someone close to them and this can be quite embarrassing isn’t it? But, that’s not the only concern.

While there are many home remedies for bad breath that we will discuss below, sometimes, the bad breath is a sign of a severe dental infection in the gums or the underlying bone. In such a case, home remedies for bad breath can have a limited benefit and calls for a visit to the dentist.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

We bring to you a curated list of home remedies for bad breath – some of which are natural remedies for bad breath while others are artificially prepared to help tackle the problem.

  • Water: Shocked much? Water is indispensable to our existence and is a very useful way to keep bad breath away. This is particularly useful when your bad breath is a result of a dry mouth. This condition is characterised by reduced saliva production by the salivary glands. Also, some medications can lead to dry mouth and precipitate a bad odour from the mouth. This is probable one of the easiest home remedies for bad breath, isn’t it?
  • Good Oral Hygiene: This is one of the most obvious home remedies for bad breath as a large majority of bad breath cases arise due to poor oral hygiene. When you fail to rinse your mouth after every meal, brush your teeth at least twice a day or miss flossing between your teeth, food is stuck on and around your teeth. This food acts as a substrate for bacteria to feed on and release acids that damage your tooth enamel causing cavities and gases that cause bad breath.
  • Green Tea: When we think of green tea, we think of a weight-loss diet. But, green tea has many more health benefits too, apart from helping one lose weight. Green tea is rich in antioxidants and a lot of research is being done to study the effect of the components of green tea on the bacteria in the mouth. It has so far been found that the antioxidant Epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) reduces the growth of specific strains of odour-causing bacteria in the mouth making it one of the effective home remedies for bad breath.
  • Strong Smelling Herbs and Spices: Our ancient culture had cures to many diseases and conditions. Post our meal, we often look for a spoon of mouth freshener, don’t we? One of the predominant constituents of mouth fresheners is fennel seeds, anise, cardamom and cinnamon. These herbs and spices are natural remedies for bad breath and can be easily obtained in your local store! Other herbs and spices that are useful include -cloves, grated ginger, mint, parsley, and thyme.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is popularly used to treat many skin conditions, mainly due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. For the same reason, tea tree oil is a good home remedy for mouth odour!
It helps to reduce the number of gas-producing bacteria and thereby, reduce bad breath.
To prepare this home remedy for mouth odour, add a drop of tea tree oil to a few drops of vegetable oil. Add this oil mixture to a cup of water and mix. Swish this mixture in your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out. Avoid ingesting the mixture as tea tree oil is dangerous.
  • Mouthwash: Among the many home remedies for bad breath, using a mouthwash is a very effective one. Just like tea tree oil was used to rinse your mouth to reduce bad breath, you can use mouthwashes that are available at medical stores. Your dentist might recommend a medicated mouthwash if you need one.
You can also prepare a mouthwash at home using baking soda: add 2 tsp of baking soda to 1 cup warm water. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds. You can prepare a mouthwash using 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar in 2 cup warm water.

While there is no doubt that these home remedies of bad breath are effective, you must also make sure to visit your dentist at least once in six months for a routine check-up.
