Fluoride or fluoride is an inorganic, monatomic anion of fluorine with the chemical formula F. Fluoride is the simplest anion of fluorine.

So, how does fluoride help in preventing caries…

Fluoride treatment helps to control the cavity development on teeth and keep it healthy. Fluoride has many benefits for the oral health of an individual. Some of the benefits of fluoride include slowing the growth of the cavity, avoiding expensive dental treatment costs, preventing gum disease problems, and keeping the teeth healthy for a longer duration.

The outermost layer of a tooth is called ENAMEL which is structurally not completely stable, i.e. there are micro gaps between enamel crystal, making it prone to decay. Fluoride application helps fill micro gaps of enamel crystal and make it more stable and hence making the toothless prone to get decay. Study shows the reduction of caries after fluoride application by 50% to 60%

Fluoride can be used in two ways:

1)Systematically: – using fluoride tablets
As we are talking about the effects of fluoride on tooth so systematic approach is not possible; For teeth, topical application proves to be beneficial.

2)Topical application: Topically applied fluoride is used to describe those delivery systems which provide fluoride for a local chemical reaction to an exposed surface of erupted dentition. In other words, it refers to fluoride applied directly on the tooth surface for prevention against caries.

It Was introduced in 1942

What is the right age for a fluoride application?

Fluoride application is advised to be done three times in a lifetime:

First at the age of 6 yrs.: – Like almost all, the milk/primary teeth have erupted by this age, so it proves to be the right time for fluoride application and prevent decay in primary teeth.

Second at the age of 9 yrs.: – It’s a mixed dentition period i.e. Few teeth is permanent and few are milk teeth so it’s right time to prevent freshly erupted permanent tooth from decay.

Third at the age of 12 yrs.: – At this age, almost all permanent teeth have erupted except the wisdom tooth so fluoride application at this age will help prevent decay in all permanent teeth except wisdom tooth.

How much time do I need to spend in the Clinic?

It takes hardly 15 minutes. After application child should not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes (preferably 1 hr.). It is completely pain-free.

Follow the schedule for fluoride application and make your child’s teeth 60% less prone to decay.

What other treatment should be done with this treatment?

Most dentist in Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad & Bangalore will suggest that kids or children should get Fluoride application done with Pit & Fissure Sealant. Application of Pit & Fissure sealant or Pit and Fissure Sealant Treatment fills up small cavities or pits on the enamel surface to ensure that they do not develop into larger cavities.
