What is a Mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a device made from a rubber-like material that fits over your teeth and gum intended to protect them from damage.

 

A mouth guard is helpful for injury in contact sports, as a treatment for Bruxism or as a part of certain dental procedures, such as tooth bleaching. Depending on its application, it may also be called a mouth protector, mouthpiece, gum shield, gum guard, night guard, bite splint, or bite plane.

When do I use a mouth guard?

  • Dental trauma:

    1. It should be used while playing sports where there is a chance of accidental injuries.

    2. The Mouthguard is helpful to prevent or reduce levels of force in the event of a jaw injury.

    3. Ensure the mouth guard fits you properly. The poorly fitting device may increase the chances of Dental trauma.

  • Oral medicine:

    1. Used as splints to restrict joint problems.

    2. Used to prevent grinding of teeth.

    3. Used to deliver topical medication.

  • Aesthetics:

    1. Tooth bleaching.

    2. Protection for porcelain veneers at night.

  • Orthodontics:

    1. As a substitute for brackets and acrylic plates.

Life of mouthguards:

Mouthguards generally have a good life span. However, if you are making this for a child, there are the chances of a child’s teeth movement. Thus mouth guards might need replacement sooner or later. In adults, replacement of mouthguards is not often required. But like any other equipment, it is subjected to wear and tear and must be changed when needed.

What about home kits?

Mouthguards are made by taking an accurate impression of your mouth and making the mouthguard fit your own teeth. The dentist will register the way your jaws bite together to make sure the mouth guard meets properly with your teeth.

To make the Mouth guards typically your mouth impression will be taken first then it will be made to fit in your mouth.

 

There are inexpensive kits available. They include heating the product in hot water and then placing it in your mouth until it sets. Unfortunately, these mouthguards can be uncomfortable to wear. Sometimes they can fall out or even cause choking. Also, the rubber material is at its lightest where it is needed most.

How to take care of my mouth guard?

  1. Wash the device before and after each use and clean it brush with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

  2. Regularly washing it in cool soapy water gives extra protection.

  3. Transport the mouth guard in a strong container that has vents.

  4. Do not leave the mouthguard directly sunlight or in Hot water.

  5. Check for any damages and check if it needs replacing.
